A guided walk organised by the Algarve History Association on 22 February 2017
The walk is around Gothic Tavira. After the Christian reconquest, the town of Tavira expanded beyond the castle walls. Some of the few remaining monuments and buildings from this time are within the walls and others are outside. Within the walls, the churches of Santa Maria and Santiago are said to have been adaptations of the previous mosques in the town. On the other hand, the church and monastery of São Francisco were founded soon after the reconquest, and as was customary with Franciscan foundations, they were built well outside the town fortifications.
On this guided walk we shall visit these remaining buildings of that era, and identify other parts of buildings which have been incorporated in other structures since that time, some of which have been modified, and some of which have been exposed by recent works of rehabilitation.
